Position Descriptions
All summer staff members must be flexible and child-focused. Over the course of the summer, the majority of summer staff will fulfill many duties and perform many camp functions in addition to their designated jobs. The saying may be old but it is true, "many hands make light work". By the end of summer those "many hands" will have given over 600 children a summer to remember and given you a community that will last a lifetime.

- College graduate and/or equivalent experience in child-care preferred

Unit Leaders (2—1 male; 1 female), are part of the leadership staff. They are directly responsible for maintaining quality relationships with their designated counselors and campers. UL’s must have effective communication skills, experience in conflict resolution, must be able to work alone or in groups and must be self-directed. A Unit Leader’s day often includes attending the daily staff meeting, being a support for counselors or campers, addressing conflicts and concerns from staff and/or campers, helping to set-up/run an activity and lead counselor debriefing meetings

- Camp and outdoor experience required
- Lifeguard Certification preferred
- Experience with conflict resolution required
- Group facilitation and leadership experience required
- Strong communication, organizational and management skills required

The Outpost Director is part of the leadership staff. He/she is directly responsible for monitoring the Outpost camp functioning and supervising all staff and all aspects of camper safety. The OP D must have quality leadership skills, experience in the outdoors, be able to work in a group setting or alone, and must have exceptional organizational skills. Throughout the summer, the OP D coordinates and leads all Outpost off-site trips (camping, hiking, and/or canoeing). The Outpost Director’s day often includes attending the daily staff meeting, handling staff and/or camper conflicts, coordinating schedules, leading counselor debriefing meetings, life guarding (preferred) and completing administrative duties.

The Program Director is part of the leadership staff. He/she is directly responsible for helping to create and oversee the implementation of quality daily programming. The PD assists counselors and program coordinators in acquisition of materials for various programs. The PD is responsible for running daily “Flagpole” time which includes engaging campers and staff in songs and games. The Program Director’s day includes attending the daily staff meeting, coordinating programs for cabin groups, working in conjunction with program coordinators, helping to maintain camp moral and completing administrative duties.

The Outpost Program Director reports to the Outpost Director and works in conjunction with the Inpost Program Director. He/she is directly responsible for helping to create and oversee the implementation of quality daily programming. The OP PD assists counselors and program coordinators in acquisition of materials for various programs. The PD is responsible for running daily “Flagpole” time which includes engaging campers and staff in songs and games and assists or leads daily and evening activities for the Outpost program. The Program Director’s day includes attending the daily staff meeting, coordinating programs for cabin groups, working in conjunction with program coordinators, helping to maintain camp moral and completing administrative duties.

The Outpost Support Staff works in conjunction with all Outpost staff to provide a safe and cohesive camp culture. They must have effective communication skills, experience in conflict resolution, must be able to work alone or in groups and must be self-directed. The Outpost Support Staff’s day includes being a support for counselors or campers, addressing conflicts and concerns from staff and/or campers, helping to set-up/run an activity and lead counselor debriefing meetings.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 21 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Must be WSI certified—including current CPR/First Aid
- At least two years of waterfront experience preferred
- Boater’s License or motor-boating experience preferred
- Strong organizational and communication skills required

The Waterfront Director is a part of the leadership staff. They are directly responsible for the supervision of all Inpost and Outpost waterfront activities, equipment and staff. The WD orients all staff to waterfront procedures, schedules lifeguards and swim instructors’ daily lessons, tests and records all campers daily swimming levels, and enforces all PLVC waterfront policies and protocols. The WD must be familiar with, and follow, all state waterfront regulations and guidelines. The WD’s day includes a daily staff meeting, overseeing swimming and boating lessons, ensuring the maintenance of the waterfront area and all equipment, assisting with daily swim testing and coordinating the weekly rainbow swim.

- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Must have minimum certification of one of the following: Current licensed physician, RN, LPN, EMT, MFR.
- Previous experience working with children in a healthcare setting preferred
- Experience with delegating and dispersing of medications required

The Health Officer is part of the leadership staff and supervises the assistant health officer. He/she is directly responsible for the health and safety needs of all staff and campers. The HO works in conjunction with PLVC’s off-site, Medical Director, and the assistant HO to maintain supplies and equipment of the infirmary, maintain accurate records and logs of medication dispersal, health treatment and emergencies. They must be comfortable with all the PLVC Standing Orders and state regulations. The HO must act decisively and competently in medical emergencies and make appropriate determinations for treatment. The HO’s day includes attending the daily staff meeting, dispersing and recording all camper and staff prescriptions and OTC medications, handling any medical emergencies, maintaining a clean, comfortable infirmary, keeping inventory of supplies and notifying the Camp Director of any needs.

- Previous experience working with children in a healthcare setting preferred

The Assistant Health Officer is responsible for assisting the HO in all routine and emergency duties. The Assistant HO must be self-driven and be able to accept tasks as delegated.

- Skilled in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word

The Summer Office Manager is part of the leadership staff. He/she works with the staff, including the year-round staff, and is directly responsible for maintaining and securing accurate records of all PLVC campers and summer programs. They are responsible for providing assistance during camper registration, completing camper/program data entry, manage the incoming/outgoing mail, and other summer camp correspondence (including making and taking telephone calls) and running errands for camp. The OM’s day includes attending the daily staff meeting, program data entry, delivering camper and staff mail, processing outgoing mail, tracking program expenditures and supporting any cabins or program areas as needed.

The Summer Assistant Office Manager provides assistance to the Summer Office Manager and also maintains the camp’s library. They are responsible for providing assistance in all of the tasks of the Summer Office Manager and, in addition, must sort and maintain order to the library and its inventory. The AOM day includes cleaning and organizing the library, re-shelving the returned books, assisting the OM with daily tasks and supporting any cabins or program areas as needed.

- College coursework in Environmental or Outdoor Education preferred
- Outdoor/camping experience required

The Nature/Camping Coordinator is responsible for teaching the Nature programs and coordinates and supervises the Inpost overnight camp-outs. He/she provides engaging and educational activities to campers during the nature programs. The Nature/Camping coordinator must have camping experience, knowledge of fire and shelter building, and experience in leadership. The coordinator’s daily tasks include preparing lessons and supplies for the week, leading activities and supporting counselors.

- Minimum of 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Creativity, and a realization that everyone expresses their creativity differently required
- Leadership experience and strong communication skills required
- Ability to work independently or in group settings
The Arts and Crafts Coordinator plans, organizes, teaches and assists campers and staff in arts and crafts activities. They provide fun and creative lessons to teach campers new techniques and medias of art. The Arts and Crafts Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the Arts and Crafts Room and keeping an inventory of supplies. Their day includes a session for planning new lessons, several hours of leading campers in arts and crafts activities and supporting counselors.

- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Experience in sailing, canoeing, kayaking required
- Must be Lifeguard certified
- Leadership experience preferred
- Experience working with elementary-high school aged youth preferred
The Boating Coordinator works in conjunction with the Inpost Programs Director, but is supervised by the Waterfront Director. They create safe, fun programming teaching the proper techniques to handle a variety of boats. The Boating Coordinator is responsible for the safety of the campers, the maintenance and inventory of the boats and the Boat House and it’s beach, and is responsible for tracking the daily boat usage. The Boating Coordinators day includes attending a waterfront meeting, teaching several hours of boating lessons, a session for planning boating lessons, and supporting counselors.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 17 years of age
- Lifeguard certification required (including First Aid and CPR)
- Life guarding experience preferred
- Experience working with elementary-high school aged youth preferred
Lifeguards are responsible for the safety of campers during the daily waterfront activities. They must be able to accept tasks as delegated, work independently and with their fellow lifeguards, be able to assertively address any and all safety concerns, and must follow all government and PLVC waterfront procedures and protocols. The lifeguard’s day includes teaching three hours of swimming lessons, guarding three hours of free swim, assessing campers’ swimming abilities and supporting counselors as needed.

Inpost Counselors are directly responsible for the safety and supervision of their cabin group at all times. All counselors must be caring, resilient, energetic role models for their campers. Counselors must maintain discipline and provide support to individual campers as well as the cabin group. The counselors day includes leading campers in activities, having meals with campers, assisting with camper swim lessons, singing songs, playing games and maintaining a positive enthusiastic attitude.
