Pretty Lake Camp Celebrates MLK Day!

Turn 2 Foundation kids with Mayor Bobby Hopewell

From Carrie, PLVC Marketing Manager:

Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

For the past two years, Pretty Lake Camp staff has participated in the MLK Day of Service, sponsored by Volunteer Kalamazoo and the City of Kalamazoo. Last year, Pretty Lake Camp Staff spent the day volunteering at the Deacon’s Conference, helping in the warehouse and with mailings. This year, we spent the day at the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission organizing their food storage area. We were lucky to have eight Turn 2 Foundation students from Milwood Middle School joining us. We were able to completely organize five rows of shelves (including bean central) and sort and organize two large bins of food. I had no idea there were so many different varieties of beans or that cans of food stacked in milk crates could weigh so much. At the end of the day, we were exhausted, but uplifted.

I really appreciate this opportunity to serve at other non-profits. It reminds me of all the good work that non-profits do in our community. Pretty Lake Camp has been the recipient of so many wonderful volunteers over the years. We wouldn’t be able to do the work we do without them. Volunteers help us accomplish our mission. On Monday, we were able to “pay it forward” to the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission. What a wonderful experience!
