Registration and Drop-Off Information
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at EDISON ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACADEMY: 929 Russell Street, Kalamazoo 49001
Plan to arrive at the Edison Environmental Science Academy by 7:30 am. Registration lasts until approximately 10:30 am or until completed.
Please plan to stay with your child until their registration is complete. General registrations are processed on a first come, first served basis. Once your child has been registered you are free to say your good-byes.
Please know that in order to fill every camp slot available we over-invite to account for changes in plans by campers and their families. We encourage you to come early as there is always a slight chance that we will have more campers show up than spaces available. If this should happen, we will do our best to get your child into another session.
Once your child is registered he/she will start camp with fun activities with camp staff on the playground until it is time to head to camp by bus for a fun week ahead!
Camper pick-up is at 2:30 p.m.
Important Health information
Health Screening: We will conduct a brief health screening at every session to check each camper for head lice and any other contagious conditions. Lice is a common condition, but is easily spread. You can avoid disappointment by screening and treating for lice in advance of camp if necessary.
Medications: Please bring medications your child may need while at camp with you to registration. All medications must be in their original container. The container must clearly state the child’s name, medication type, dosage and any instructions from the doctor
Please bring an emergency inhaler if your child has one – even if they don’t use it on a regular basis
What to Pack
- A comfortable pair of tennis shoes (No sandals)
- Medication (in its original container)
Optional – we provide these items but know it is sometimes more comfortable to bring your own:
- 6 pairs of socks
- 6 pairs of underwear
- 1 bathing suit (1 piece for girls)
If your child does bring these items, please label each item with your child’s name.
WHAT NOT TO BRING: Please DO NOT send any money with your child. No electronics, including iPods, cell phones, etc. are permitted at camp. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Frequently Asked Questions
I can’t be at registration. Can my friend drop off my child? An adult needs to stay with your child until he/she is through the whole process. It’s best if a family member brings your child in case we have questions. If a friend has to bring your child, be sure that your camper’s forms are filled out completely!
What if my child is afraid of the dark or gets homesick? Trained staff will help your child work through these issues and help him/her have a great week at camp.
What if my child doesn’t know how to swim? Certified lifeguards & trained waterfront observers will teach your child how to swim and be sure that he/she stays safe and has fun while in the lake.
What if my daughter gets her period while at camp? Caring health officers and staff will help your daughter. We have sanitary products that will meet her needs.
Can I call or write to my child while he/she is at camp? We have found that when parents call their child, it can make homesickness worse. We ask that parents NOT call unless there is an emergency. You can write to your camper. Mail a letter to camp a few days before your child comes and we will make sure it is delivered.
How does my child get to and from camp? Kalamazoo Public School buses provide transportation to and from camp from the registration site at Edison Environmental Science Academy.
What if my child has medical issues or dietary allergies? We have a full-time, licensed health officer (HO) who is available day or night for any needs your child may have. The HO is trained in distributing medications, has medical protocols that are followed, and can contact our Medical Director (a licensed physician) if needed. If your child has a serious issue, we will notify you. Kitchen staff will accommodate any special dietary needs that your child may have.
What if my child can’t attend the assigned session? If you are unable to attend the assigned session, your child can try to come to any other session as a “standby camper”- a camper on the waiting list. Standby campers are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis if there is still space available after invited campers have gone through registration. It is important that you come to registration by 7:30 a.m. to improve your child’s chances of being accepted. We have to wait until each invited camper has gone through registration before we can decide if there is room for standby campers.
Do I need to call if my child can’t attend the assigned session? You do not need to notify us if your child can’t attend the session they were invited to. We will automatically make the change if your child does not show up for the session or if your child comes to a session (as a standby camper).
What if I have an emergency and need to contact my child? Please call (269) 375-1950 and ask to speak to the camp director.
